Africa’s Hospitality Future Shaped by Visionary Leaders Honored at 2025 Future Hospitality Summit Africa Awards Celebrating Sustainable Growth and Ethical Leadership

The 2025 Future Hospitality Summit (FHS) Africa is set to spotlight three extraordinary leaders who have profoundly influenced the hospitality industry across Africa and the global stage. These distinguished individuals—David Green, William E. Heinecke, and Hala Matar Choufany—will receive prestigious awards recognizing their unwavering commitment, visionary leadership, and dedication to driving sustainable growth in hospitality. The announcements come as part of FHS Africa’s broader mission to champion ethical leadership, inclusive development, and long-term impact within the sector.

Honouring Trailblazers Who Redefine Hospitality’s Future

This year’s FHS Africa Awards honor remarkable careers marked by innovation, resilience, and transformative initiatives. The winners were carefully selected by the FHS Africa Advisory Board, a collective of senior industry experts and leaders whose combined experience spans decades of global hospitality evolution. Their rigorous selection process emphasizes values such as integrity, social responsibility, and sustainable business practices—principles that resonate deeply with FHS Africa’s vision for the continent’s hospitality future.

William E. Heinecke, a towering figure in Asian and international hospitality, will receive the FHS Leadership Award. Heinecke’s journey began with an entrepreneurial spark and a modest capital of just US$1,200. At only seventeen years old, he founded his first company under the intriguing name ‘Minor’—a clever reference to his underage status at the time. Over nearly six decades, Heinecke expanded this initial venture into Minor Hotels, an influential hospitality group with a presence in fifty-six countries and a portfolio exceeding five hundred and thirty hotels. The company’s brands, including Anantara, Avani, Oaks, Elewana, and Tivoli, have become synonymous with luxury, innovation, and cultural sensitivity.

Heinecke’s visionary acquisition of Spain’s NH Hotel Group in 2018 marked a significant milestone, accelerating Minor Hotels’ global expansion and establishing the company as a formidable player in the international hospitality market. Beyond business success, Heinecke’s philanthropic endeavors reveal a deep commitment to sustainability and community welfare. He founded the Golden Triangle Asian Elephant Foundation, focusing on wildlife conservation; the Heinecke Foundation, which advances educational opportunities; and the Mai Khao Marine Turtle Foundation, dedicated to marine preservation. His trailblazing work has earned him top industry accolades such as HOTELS Magazine’s Corporate Hotelier of the World and Entrepreneur of the Year at the Asia Pacific Enterprise Awards. Today, as Chairman of Minor International’s Board, Heinecke continues to steer the company’s strategic vision while advancing its social impact initiatives.

“It’s about ensuring that our work aligns with the values of our people, our community, and our environment.”

Hala Matar Choufany, recipient of the FHS Excellence Award, has set new benchmarks in hospitality advisory through her role as President of HVS Middle East, Africa & South Asia. The first woman to hold this position, she has led over 5,000 advisory engagements that have shaped hotel investments, asset strategies, and valuations across key markets. Her leadership is grounded in transparency, ethical decision-making, and long-term value creation – principles she champions not just in boardrooms, but also in classrooms and industry forums worldwide. A respected voice in global hospitality discourse, Choufany is committed to nurturing talent, supporting sustainable development in emerging markets, and driving responsible investment practices across Africa and beyond. “True leadership is not about titles or accolades,” she said. “It’s defined by trust, integrity, and the impact created through knowledge-sharing and collaboration.”

In parallel, David Green, CEO of the iconic V&A Waterfront in Cape Town, will be recognized with the FHS Outstanding Contribution to Hospitality Award. Green’s leadership tenure since 2009 has been transformative, orchestrating an ambitious R8 billion revitalization that has propelled the Waterfront into one of Africa’s most celebrated mixed-use destinations. His stewardship has crafted a model that elegantly blends commercial success with social and environmental consciousness, making the precinct a global exemplar for sustainable urban development.

Under Green’s guidance, the V&A Waterfront supports approximately eighty thousand jobs, fostering opportunities for local entrepreneurs and small businesses. The integration of cultural landmarks such as the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (MOCAA) and Makers Landing has positioned the Waterfront as a vibrant hub for creativity, innovation, and tourism. Moreover, Green has overseen a significant expansion in hospitality offerings, growing the portfolio to fourteen hotels featuring more than eighteen hundred rooms. Central to Green’s vision is a steadfast focus on inclusivity, job creation, and environmental stewardship. “Everything we do is viewed through the lenses of job creation, inclusivity, and sustainability,” Green affirms, underscoring his commitment to purposeful development that benefits communities and preserves the natural environment.

Hala Matar Choufany, President of HVS Middle East, Africa & South Asia, will receive the FHS Excellence Award, recognizing her outstanding contributions to advancing hospitality consultancy and market intelligence across emerging and established markets. With extensive expertise in guiding strategic growth, investment, and operational excellence, Choufany has helped shape numerous high-profile projects that have elevated industry standards and fostered sustainable development throughout the regions she serves. Her leadership exemplifies the excellence and forward-thinking that FHS Africa seeks to highlight.

Exclusive Insights and Inspiration at FHS Africa 2025

The awards ceremony will feature exclusive, live one-on-one interviews with each honoree on the FHS Africa stage, providing delegates an unparalleled opportunity to engage with these industry icons. Through candid conversations, the recipients will share personal stories, leadership philosophies, pivotal career moments, and their visions for the future of hospitality in Africa and beyond. These sessions promise to be cornerstone events of the Summit, delivering thought leadership and actionable insights for current and future hospitality professionals.

FHS Africa 2025: A Platform for Sustainable Growth and Inclusive Development

As the hospitality sector continues to recover and reinvent itself in a dynamic global context, FHS Africa 2025 maintains its role as a vital forum for accelerating Africa’s hospitality potential. By honoring leaders who embody ethical practices and sustainable growth, the Summit not only celebrates individual achievement but also inspires a broader movement toward responsible hospitality development across the continent.

Commenting on the announcement, Matthew Weihs, Managing Director of The Bench, said:
“We are absolutely delighted to be recognising William, Hala, and David at FHS Africa this year. Each of them represents the very best of our industry – visionary leadership, resilience, and a deep commitment to positive change. Their stories are a testament to what is possible when passion meets purpose. FHS Africa continues to be the premier hospitality investment platform on the continent, and honouring these individuals reflects the exceptional calibre of conversation and connection that defines this event.”

These awards reinforce FHS Africa’s commitment to spotlighting pioneers who drive positive change, whether by championing environmental stewardship, empowering local communities, or innovating in business models that balance profitability with social impact. By doing so, FHS Africa fosters a collaborative ecosystem where industry players can learn, network, and collectively elevate the continent’s standing on the world hospitality stage.
